Uranium mineralisation in the southwestern part of the Cuddapah Basin, Andhra Pradesh

Exploration for uranium in the Mesoproterozoic (Purana) Cuddapah basin was commenced by the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) in early 1950's. In its first phase until late 1950's, radiometric surveys were carried mainly over the basal conglomerate and Gulcheru quartzite sequence in the western, southern and southwestern portions of the basin to locate quartz-pebble conglomerate (QPC) type uranium mineralisation that had dominated the world uranium supply scene in late 1950's and early 1960's. As this sequence turned out to be monotonously thoriferous, further exploration for U was stopped. In the second phase that commenced in late 1980's, exploration for U was carried out in the Vempalle Formation of Lower Cuddapah Supergroup, as a consequence to the discovery of U in a few samples of Vempalle dolostone and quartzite, received from the Geological Survey of India, incidental to their prospecting for phosphorite. This has resulted in establishing, for the first time in the world, a potential large-tonnage but low-grade, carbonate-hosted, stratabound uranium deposit in the Tummallapalle-Rachakuntapalle-Gadankipalle area in the southerwestern part of the Cuddapah basin. Important aspects of this exploration together with characteristic features of this mineralisation that extends over 160 km long belt from Chalumpalli to Maddimadugu are presented in this paper. Besides, continued exploration for uranium in other parts and environs of this basin led to identification of some more types of uranium mineralisation, viz., unconformity-proximal type in both the basement granitoid and its overlying Srisailam/Banganapalle quartzite in the Lambapur-Peddagattu-Koppunuru area, fracture-controlled one in deformed basement granitoid around Mulapalle, shear-controlled one in basic metavolcanics and schists at Kasturigattu along the thrusted contact of eastern margin and epithermal type in the Gulcheru quartzite. All these make the earlier considered thoriferous Cuddapah basin as the "Cuddapah Uranium Province". The experience gained in exploring the Cuddapah basin is fruitfully utilised in exploring other Purana (Meso/Neo-proterozoic) basins of India. These aspects are also touched upon briefly in this paper.
