Compilation of geological and mineral resources data in Japan

Compilation of geological and mineral resources data in Japan

Mineral Resources Assessment, Development and Management Series 7: 171-184

Japan is one of the major consumers of mineral resources in the world. Over recent decade, Japan has been taking a leading role in mineral resource development throughout the world, aiming to expand world mineral supply by aggressively executing exploration activities from reconnaissance through to prefeasibility. Through these activities, Japan hopes not only to secure a stable supply of minerals to meet it's domestic demand, but also to realize the sustainable development of mineral resources worldwide. The Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ) is the only national institute for integrated earth science research in Japan. It was established in 1882 with the aims of making geological maps of the country and to undertake research related to the exploration of mineral resources. GSJ has contributed to the rapid progress in geophysical and geochemical exploration methods for minerals since 1950s. Since the 1970s, in response to changing social needs, it has expanded scientific activities into the additional fields of marine geology, geothermal research, local and global environmental issues, and prediction and prevention of natural hazards. GSJ encourages international collaboration with many countries and communities, and dissemination of geoscientific information to the public (Geological Survey of Japan, 1998). As a major consumer and importer of minerals, Japan has a vital interest in maintaining a secure and stable supply of resources for the benefit of the world's economy. The Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ) was established in recognition of its responsibility towards the development of the world's mineral resources. Over the years, the MMAJ has played an important role by encouraging exploration, mine development and technological research, as well as the prevention of mining-related pollution problems throughout the world.
