Shahjahanpur-Puranpur area of Ganga basin is a potential prospect for fresh water aquifer as it has coarse/fine sand beds within the alluvium and Siwalik sediments. Geophysical surveys employing deep electrical resistivity soundings were conducted from Jalalabad in the south to Pilibhit in the north and Baheri in the west to Puranpur in the east on a random grid of almost 20-25 Km with a spread of 7 Km using Schlumberger and axial dipole arrays of electrode configuration for delineating fresh ground water aquifer at deeper levels. Initially, Schlumberger array was employed up to 2000 m (AB/2) and there after axial dipole was used. Resistivity surveys have revealed, in general, a six layer subsurface setup and the curve observed were of HKQ type. Second level fresh water aquifer thus demarcated has shown resistivity in the range of 20-45 Ohm.m. The layer below this aquifer appears to be clayey and saturated with saline water. The resistivity of the saline zone has been observed to be in the range of 2-10 Ohm.m. The thickness of the fresh ground water zone varies considerably in the area. Depth of the contact zone of fresh and saline water is about 1850 m b.g.l. near Puranpur, 1944 near Shahjahanpur, 1050 m near Baheri and 2600 m b.g.l. near Nigohi. The quality of ground water confined within fine/medium sand appears to be very good and analysed to have T.D.S. of 100-150 mg/lt NaCl equivalent.
