Digital geologic map development with integration of multiple information sources; a case study in the area of the Elmdale Dome, Chase County, Kansas

The Elmdale Dome, located in Chase County, east-central Kansas, is a small but interesting dome structure located along the crest of the Nemaha Uplift. It displays a sigmoidal shape with subsidiary minor anticlinal and synclinal closures and is characterized by extensive erosion of pre-Pennsylvanian sedimentary and basement rocks over the apex of the dome. Positive expression of the structure on the surface implies post-Permian movement, providing interesting questions for field mapping and interpretation of previously published geologic maps. The Elmdale Dome is flanked to the east by the Humbolt fault zone, which in this vicinity has a maximum apparent total throw to the east of 1,100 feet (335 m). Over 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas has been produced from the Elmdale field associated with the dome. This report presents a digital map of surface geology covering the Elmdale, Hymer, Strong City and Cottonwood Falls quadrangles of the USGS 7.5 minute topographic map series. Procedures used to interpret geologic information presented on smaller scale maps published by the USGS at the beginning of the century and by the Kansas Geological Survey in the 1950's are outlined in the report. The procedures facilitate the integration and transfer of that information to the larger scale topographic base maps. Additional geologic information interpreted from more recent aerial photography is also integrated into the final digital and paper geologic map products developed with the Kansas Survey's GIMMAP system (Geodata Interactive Management Map Analysis and Production). Using petrophysical and driller's log data from numerous wells in the area, the Elmdale Dome's expression in the surface geology is related to its subsurface structure derived from measurements on the top of numerous stratigraphic units.
