Abstract
The recent discovery of a spinose microornament in an Orthid from the Uppermost Ordovician (Ptychopleurella villasi) is a contribution to the discussion about the origin of the Spiriferid brachiopods. The different features constitutive of this ornament (scaly growth lamellae, free marginal spines) are compared with the Spiriferids' and show great similarities.
