Discovery of the first example of the white smoke type of exhalative rock (hydrothermal sedimentary dolostone) in the Jiuxi Basin, western China

A number of petroleum geologists take it seriously that extensively distributed lacustrine laminated dolomitic mudstone and muddy dolomite contain rich special mineral components, such as ferrodolomite, albite and analcite, and superior geological conditions for petroleum and natural gas in the Xiagou Formation in the Qingxi Sag of Jiuxi Basin. Past studies indicate that the cause of the formation of the two types of rocks is the same. They resulted from volcanism. Evidence that the spatial spreading pattern of the two types of rocks is controlled by the activity of a basement fault, and the mineral assemblage, which includes large quantities of barite and dickite and micro-quantities of pseudo-galena, chalcopyrite and galena, and the texture and structural features of the two types of rocks, indicate a hydrothermal sedimentary nature. It is suggested that the genesis of two types of rocks makes them the "white smoke type" of lacustrine exhalative rock, which is divided into four types, i.e., filling lode rock type, water bursting breccia type, basin depositing type, and regional diffusing type, and six main types of assemblages, i.e., ferrodolomite, albite, barite, analcite, and dickite. It is also suggested that the exhalative rock is a new genetic type of hydrothermal sedimentary dolostone. The implications of exhalative rocks in exploring and developing oil and gas fields are discussed.
