Discussion on petroleum and natural gas prospecting in Yangtze region from difference between shallow and deep tectonics in Jianghan area

Comparing tectonic shape identified by deep prospecting wells with that observed at the surface in the Jianghan area indicates that remarkable differences exist between shallow and deep tectonics. The folds are generally closed and nappe structures are well developed at shallow depth, while the folds are usually broad and nappe structures are weakly developed at deeper levels. The shallow and deep structures are bounded by nappe structural surfaces. Below the surface there are drape folds consisting of large-scale anticlines and synclines, usually 30-40km in broadness. Geological and geophysical data indicate that large-scale synclines mainly consist of marine facies Devonian-Triassic strata, hence are favorable targets for petroleum and natural gas prospecting, in the other hand, large-scale anticlines mainly consist of deeply buried marine Sinian-Silurian strata of large thickness, which are favorable for natural gas prospecting.
