Ecology and distribution of recent benthic Ostracoda in Gulf of Mannar, off Tuticorin, southeast coast of India

Ecology and distribution of recent benthic Ostracoda in Gulf of Mannar, off Tuticorin, southeast coast of India

Gondwana Geological Magazine Special volume 6: 129-138

To study the spatial and temporal distribution and ecology of Recent benthic Ostracoda, 48 inner shelf sediment and bottom water samples were collected during the four seasons of an year from the Gulf of Mannar, off Tuticorin, southeast coast of India. Living and total (living and dead) population size determined and correlated with various observed sediment and water parameters controlling the population, have been analysed. Spatially, maximum population size attained during any season was found only in the intermediate segment of the transect where the CaCO (sub 3) content is found to be high and temporally, the Summer season (April) recorded higher population. Of the 52 taxa recorded, the distribution and ecology of 8 abundant and widespread fauna viz., Carinocythereis hamata (Kingma), Cytherelloidea leroyi Keij, Loxocorniculum liljeborgii (Brady), Mutilus pentoekensis (Kingma), Neocytheretta murilineata Zhao and Whately, Neomonoceratina iniqua (Brady), Tanella gracilis Kingma and Xestoleberis variegata Brady of the present area, are discussed in detail. The higher calcium carbonate content of sediment and increase in temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen of bottom waters, favour the abundance of population. The most congenial substrate for the thriving of the fauna is found to be silty sand in the study area.
