The thermal conductivity of porous rocks, as two-phase (dry or water-saturated) or three-phase (water-containing, non-saturated) medium for heat transfer, depends upon the thermal conductivities of solid component and pore fluid, porosity, the configuration and orientation of the pores, and water content, etc. The experimental investigation of water saturation of rocks was carried out on 38 rock samples selected from Tertiary and Permian-Carboniferous clastic strata in North China through comparative determination of thermal conductivities of dry and water-saturated rock specimen by a transient ring-source probe device. Thermal conductivity determination was also conducted on 4 samples with diverse water contents. Experimental results show that the effect of water content in pores of high porosity rocks is remarkable that is fairly consistent with the reference data.
