Abstract
Discusses some of the difficulties encountered when applying the metamorphic facies concept to an interpretation of the ancient crystalline rock complexes of the Alps, citing the almost identical mineral association of some Hercynian and pre-Hercynian rock samples from the Peio and Mare valleys (Italy) as one of several examples. Petrogenetic phases are considered more reliable criteria than metamorphic facies for a study of the metamorphic (and tectonic) history of rocks.
