Investigation of the Sikouzi Formation in Sanying, Guyuan County, Ningxia, China, and suggestion for the establishment of a new lithostratigraphic unit

This paper discusses the history of the naming of the Sikouzi Formation found in Sanying, Guyuan, Ningxia, and existing questions, and the newly established lithostratigraphic unit. The Ulan'uzhur Formation is defined, and its stratotype section, lithology and lithofacies, organic assemblages and stratigraphic time, etc. The author suggests that the Sikouzi Formation should not be used in early Tertiary correlation in the areas of Ningxia, Gansu, and western Inner Mongolia, or only retained in Ningxia, and in the other areas the newly established Ulan'uzhur Formation should be used.
