Joint inversion of teleseismic and strong-motion waveforms for the rupture process of the 1999 Duzce, Turkey earthquake

Joint inversion of teleseismic and strong-motion waveforms for the rupture process of the 1999 Duzce, Turkey earthquake

Individual Studies by Participants at the International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering 37: 139-148

The teleseismic and strong-motion waveforms were inverted to determine the rupture process of the Duzce earthquake (Mw = 7.1). We first inverted the displacement waveforms of teleseismic P-waves provided by Data Management Center of the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS-DMC) to fix the fault geometry and some parameters. We then jointly inverted these teleseismic data and strong-motion seismograms from the Earthquake Research Department (ERD) of General Directorate of Disaster Affairs of Turkey. The rupture process of the Duzce earthquake was determined for explaining both the data sets. The strong-motion data have improved the resolution of the slip distribution, though the result of the joint inversion is still preliminary. The Duzce earthquake was characterized by bilateral fault rupture in a rather small zone. This zone agrees with the distributions of aftershocks, surface ruptures and damage.
