The extension of the fault bounding the Langres plateau is traced in the area between Chalindrey and Cohons (Haute-Marne, France). Alpine orogenic movements were felt as far as the south margin of the Hercynian axial zone. Sudden subsidence of the present Saone basin caused formation of a major fault. Two typical inversions of relief are developed in the area south of Noidant. One involved conversion of a horst into a Liassic depression; the other, almost complete erosion of the marly-shaly core of an anticline.
