Landform development of Wada Point in Kobe City, facing Osaka Bay; in relation to severely damaged area in west Kobe City by 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake

Most severely damaged area in west Kobe City by the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake is located in the region surrounded by the coastline extending from the Suma coast to Wada Point and the foot of Rokko Mountains. Landform development of this marginal coast composed of straight coastline and Wada Point was investigated. Coastline changes were investigated using old maps, aerial photographs and beach survey data. At this coast, eastward longshore sand transport prevails and this transport rate is estimated to be 2,100 m (super 3) /yr. At Wada Point the original coastline changes its direction largely and wave shelter zone is formed north of the point to accelerate formation of the sand spit due to excess sand deposition.
