Late Cenozoic palaeobathymetry and geohistory analysis of central West Timor, eastern Indonesia

Results of quantitative correlations between Late Cenozoic benthic foraminiferal faunas from Central West Timor and Recent faunas from the Australian-Irian Jaya continental margin provide high resolution palaeobathymetric criteria for geohistory analysis. For the last 3 Ma, two periods of uplift were found in parts of the Central Basin on West Timor, one from 2.4 to 1.6 Ma B.P. which decelerated from 5 to 0.5 mm per year, and a second which started about 750 ka ago and then accelerated to acquire rates of up to 20 mm per year during the last 100 ka. The step-wise uplift history documents the response of this part of the foreland basin to the collision of the Australian continental margin with the Banda Arc.
