Magnetotelluric sounding in Petropavlovsk geodynamic testing site, Kamchatka

About 1000 MT soundings of the Petropavlovsk Geodynamic Tests Site were analyzed. The curves were classified by the directions along and across the major structural zones. Longitudinal and transverse MTS curves are affected by local galvanic effects. We tried to suppress these effects by statistical averaging. A qualitative interpretation of such average curves which are largely free from such local effects allowed a zoning of the site area into zones having different electroconductivities at depths. We distinguish a western zone having a well-pronounced crustal layer of increased conductivity and an eastern one close to the Benioff Zone, where the layer was not identified. The active volcanoes are confined to the boundary between the two zones. Further quantitative interpretation of MTS curves can only be done using 3-D numerical and physical modeling.
