Magnetotelluric sounding in the Klyuchi region of Kamchatka

Magnetotelluric soundings were made in the Klyuchi region (USSR) in a zone of active volcanoes. The resulting curve indicates that the medium is anisotropic. From an analysis of the behavior of variations of the vertical component of the magnetic field the typical axes of anisotropy are plotted. A low-resistivity layer at 40-90 km indicated by the sounding data is evidently related to the magma chamber of the volcanoes; seismic investigations have shown this layer to be a low-velocity zone. A 200-km discontinuity brought out by the magnetotelluric soundings is the top of a high-conductivity layer in the mantle, and is probably of regional extent under Kamchatka. This is the depth of the lower boundary of the earthquake focal zone for the Kuril-Kamchatka region.
