Maikopian sediment accumulation in the Caucasus in connection with oil and gas survey-exploration operations

Maikopian sediment accumulation in the Caucasus in connection with oil and gas survey-exploration operations

Azerbaydzhanskoye Neftyanoye Khozyaystvo 1990(5): 4-7

Some new concepts on conditions of Maikopian sediment accumulation in the Caucasus are discussed in conjunction with direction of oil and gas survey exploration operations. This sedimentary body of the Caucasus mobile zone is represented as a three component structural formation system consisting of geosynclinal flysch, polygeosynclinal maikopite and orogenic molasse formations. Definite similarity (structural position, substance composition, textural features, enrichment with organic substance and bitumen) of maikopite Caucasus formation with Domanician formation of ancient and transitional complexes of young platforms is pointed out. It is stated that significant fractions of lesser sandstone bodies related to Maikopian series display deformation origin rather than sedimentary, i.e. they appear to be boudins but no lenses. Survey methods of oil and gas formations of syncline regions in Azerbaijan (analogous to detected formations in Fore-Caucasus) are considered.
