New 14C reservoir ages for late Pleistocene shells in the Pacific Northwest and their implications for changes in late glacial oceanic circulation in the Northeast Pacific

Differences in 14C ages of coeval, late Pleistocene, shell and wood samples in British Columbia and Washington record the extent of upwelling and oceanic circulation in the northeast Pacific. Although previous work suggested differences between modern and late Pleistocene paired shell and wood samples of -800 years, three lines of evidence all show that marine reservoir ages in the Puget Lowland were -1250 years between approximately 11,000 and 12,000 14C-yrs. B. P. (1) Sets of shell/wood pairs show that shells average 1250 years older than coeval wood. (2) Previously collected shell/wood pairs show that shells average about -1200 years older than wood. (3) 21 dates on shells using a reservoir correction of -800 years are generally older than 15 dates on wood from the same stratigraphic unit, but match the wood dates very well when a 1250-year reservoir correction is applied. This 50% greater reservoir age at 11,000-12,000 14C-yrs B. P. suggests that ocean circulation in the NE Pacific just prior to the Younger Dryas was substantially different than it was subsequently. The new -1250-year marine reservoir correction means that all previously published, corrected, 14C dates of shells during this interval are 450 years too old, and all uncorrected dates are 1250 years too old.
