The northernmost extension of the Deccan Trap is exposed around Lalitpur District, Uttar Pradesh. A thin sedimentary sequence of Intertrappean Bed comprising volcanic ash and chert (gray and black) with carbonaceous detritus is outcropped in a nala cutting near Papro village, Lalitpur District, Uttar Pradesh. Palynological investigation of the above Intertrappean sediments yielded an assemblage comprising algal and fungal remains, pteridophytic spores and angiospermic pollen. The assemblage is characterised by the Palaeocene spore-pollen marker taxa viz., Dandotiaspora dilata, Dandotiaspora pseudoauriculata, Dandotiaspora plicata, Lakiapollis ovatus and Spinizonocolpites echinatus. The sediments were deposited under lacustrine condition during the quiescence phase of volcanic activity. The depositional environment was also influenced by some degree of marine conditions, as evidenced by remains of halophytic plants palynomorph viz., Spinizonocolpites echinatus and Lithoparaphyses paproensis which are related to mangrove elements Nypa, a palm, and Acrostrichum, a fern, respectively.
