Physical constraints on the Noachian deluge

Physical constraints on the Noachian deluge

Journal of Geological Education 31(2): 134-139

Scientific creationists maintain that Biblical legends, such as Noah's flood, can be explained on a sound scientific basis. Consequently, they say, Biblical models deserve a place in the science curriculum. To test the Biblical account of the Noachian deluge, we evaluated four possible sources of the flood waters to determine if a natural explanation is possible. These sources include rain, hydrothermal springs, and two types of cometary impact. Calculations demonstrate that if thermodynamic constraints are accepted, supernatural intervention through miraculous operation of physical and chemical processes is required. Since miracles cannot be predicted and are not susceptible to any sort of check or proof, they have no place in the science curriculum.--Modified journal abstract.
