Processing large offset marine seismic data; experience with the large aperture seismic experiment

Processing large offset marine seismic data; experience with the large aperture seismic experiment

SEG Abstracts 1982(1): 128-130

Wide aperture seismic data have the potential to yield better definition of deep reflection events, greater discrimination against multiples, higher velocity resolution, shear velocity structure from P-wave sources, and enhanced reflections near critical angles. However, the data cannot be treated by wholly conventional processing techniques because of departure from the hyperbolic traveltime assumption, crossover of reflection events, refractions, long water column reverberation times on continental shelf areas, and high amplitude coherent primaries and multiples obscuring low amplitude primaries. In addition, the data are collected using several shooting and recording ships requiring an additional effort to determine recording time and source-receiver offset. Suppression of water column reverberation, multiples, and primaries at large offsets is best done on shotpoint gathers by velocity reject filters. The presence of a wide range of array velocities or ray parameters, particularly at large offsets, can limit the useful bandwidth of the data if spatial aliasing is to be avoided.
