Formation of nips in shore-line cliffs composed of Miocene tuff in the Matsushima area, Japan, is attributed to a combination of chemical weathering in the intertidal zone and mechanical erosion by wave, current, and wind action. Undercutting of the shore by nips has played an important part in the formation of the cliffs.
