The Quaternary section of the Biwa lake region, central Honshu, Japan, comprises the Paleobiwa group, in which three formations and ten tuff zones are distinguished, older and younger terrace deposits, and alluvium. Endemic species in the present-day biota are explained as due to landlocking of the lake basin following the second of the three stages of development recognized in the paleogeographic history of the region.
