Tertiary-Cretaceous reworked microfossils in Pleistocene glacial-marine sediments; an index to glacial activity

Reworked Tertiary-Cretaceous (T-K) foraminifera occur in a well-defined Pleistocene sequence on the Scotian Shelf. Although T-K rocks are still outcropping here, virtually no T-K foraminifera are found in Holocene sediments. Significant occurrences of these forms have been recorded in glacial sediments and their presence increases deeper into the glacial-marine sequence. The down-section increase in T-K abundance is systematic and suggests that changing abundances of T-K forms may be an index to the amount of erosive glacial activity taking place at the former ice margin shoreward of this location. The abundance of these forms may indirectly provide some chronological control on isolated silt-clay samples that have been recovered recently by offshore drilling.
