The search for radioactive ores during World War II brought the uranium-bearing Witwatersrand gold ores under scrutiny. In the course of investigating concentration and extraction methods, detailed microscopic mineragraphic data were obtained and are here presented. The Precambrian "reefs" of the Witwatersrand area (South Africa) are conglomerates and quartzites through which gold and uraniferous material are widely distributed. Uraninite occurs as detrital grains. Metamorphic and/or chemical processes caused the formation of secondary uraninite and thucholite. The evidence indicating that the gold and uraninite were deposited simultaneously and that the gold must have been detrital, even though it is now mainly authigenic, is discussed in detail and cited as the basis for a modified placer theory of origin. Discussion by J. W. N. Sharpe, C. A. Cousins, C. F. Davidson, G.W. Bain, and the late B. Wasserstein contributes further data on the ores, but the controversy over their origin still stands.
