The staining of plagioclase felspars in thin sections

The method used by Baily and Stevens for the selective staining of potash feldspar and plagioclase in rock slabs and thin sections is useful in demonstrating the relationships between various feldspars. Two major drawbacks to the method are the intense staining of magnesium-rich minerals and the difficulty of staining fine-grained rocks. The method, therefore, is only advantageous in the study of acid igneous and quartzo-feldspathic metamorphic rocks of medium to coarse grain.
