The method developed by Eugster to control oxygen fugacities at high temperature and hydrostatic pressure consists of utilizing solid assemblages as oxygen buffers in the presence of water. This method controls the fugacity of oxygen in discontinuous steps. A simple variation is proposed which controls the fugacity in continuous steps. This is obtained by using as one of the assemblages a binary solid solution of two oxides which have very different free energies. In this way the composition may have continuous variations, as may also the oxygen fugacity.
