Changes in the paternal and maternal shares in the heritability of the heat resistance of the organism and muscles of Asellus aquaticus during heat acclimation

The coefficients of paternal and maternal shares in the heritability of the heat resistance of the body organism and muscles of descendants of the same parental pairs of A. aquaticus (Crustacea, Isopoda) were calculated using double factor analysis. The animals were kept at the optimal temperature of 17.degree. C and subjected to heat acclimation at 27.degree. C. At the optimal temperature, the values of heritability coefficient are highest. During thermal acclimation a decrease in the heritability coefficient was recorded due to a strong decrease in the maternal share of a genotypical component in the total phenotypical variability of the character. When the death of animals is caused by the injurious effect of high temperature, such a response promotes maintenance of genetic heterogeneity of heat resistance of the body and muscles within a population, and is inherited for the most part, from mothers.
