Changes of dental numbers with growth in Limanda yokohamae (Gunther) and discrimination of the species from L. herzensteini Jordan et Snyder

Changes of dental numbers with growth in Limanda yokohamae (Gunther) and discrimination of the species from L. herzensteini Jordan et Snyder

Bulletin of Tohoku National Fisheries Research Institute 40: 27-36

Changes of dental numbers and their mechanisms in larvae and juveniles of L. yokohamae and L. herzensteini were examined, and an availability of dental numbers for taxonomical key was discussed. Samples were collected at 39 stations in Miyako Bay and 35 stations in Yamada Bay Japan during Aug. and Oct. of 1961 and March and Sept. of 1962, and at 4 stations in Yamada Bay during Sept. 1972. An additional sample was obtained at the market in Miyako City in July, 1974. Two rows of teeth were observed on jaws of the blind side in L. yokohamae. The teeth on inner sides of jaws compensate for the loss of the teeth on outer sides and develop to typical incisor teeth. Teeth that originated in inner rows were distinguishable clearly from the outer teeth. Similar phenomenon was observed in L. herzensteini. Decreases in dental number with growth was found in each row on the lower jaw of the ocular side and both jaws of blind side in L. yokohamae. A local difference in decreasing patterns in number of inner teeth on jaws of blind side with growth was recognized between Miyako Bay and Yamada Bay in this species. L. yokohamae can be separated from L. herzensteini by comparing the number of outer teeth on both jaws of blind side by the rejection ellipse method.
