Efecto termo-hialino sobre la preferencia salina, crecimiento y sobrevivencia en larvas del camaron blanco, Penaeus schmitti, en el laboratorio

Salinity preference experiments of postlarval Penaeus schmitti obtained from the FUN-DACIENCIA laboratory were performed under laboratory conditions using the experimental salinity gradient tank without barrier. The effects of temperature and salinity on growth and survival in 60-80 day old juveniles were also determined. Postlarvae showed preference for low salinities from day 7 to 46 of development. Postlarvae acclimated for eight days at low salinities of 5 and 15 ppt did not show preference for elevated salinities. Those acclimated at 35 and 45 ppt penetrated all experimental salinities. Juveniles reached optimum levels of growth and survival at 30 degree C and 15-30 ppt salinities. These results could explain abundance of larval Penaeus schmitti in estuarine zones of low salinities and high temperatures. Our data suggest the suitability of this native species for aquaculture.
