Stegodyphus manaus n.sp. (Eresidae) from Brazil is the first New World representative of the genus. Hitherto, the whole family Eresidae has been regarded as an Old World taxon in its distribution, with no representatives at all in the Neotropics. However, there are now good reasons to believe that Eresus annulipes described in 1857 had not been based on an introduced specimen; presumably, this name refers to the nonsocial sister species (= Stegodyphus annulipes) of S. manaus which is considered to be a social living spider.
