First record of Diphyllobothrium macroovatum Jurachno, 1973 from minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata Lacepede, 1804 (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in Japan

First record of Diphyllobothrium macroovatum Jurachno, 1973 from minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata Lacepede, 1804 (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in Japan

Japanese Journal of Parasitology 296: 499-505

A Diphyllobothrium sp. from minke whale, B. acutorostrata, landed at Abashiri, Hokkaido (1969) and Ayukawa, Miyagi Prefecture (1970). It was previously reported by Kamo et al. (1971) and was identified by the authors as D. macroovatum Jurachno, 1973. Despite some differences in its smaller scolex, larger seminal vesicle and larger number of uterine loops, the morphological characters were generally coincident with those of D. macroovatum, which was found in the intestine of grey whale (Eschrichtius gibbosis Erxleben) living in the Bering Sea by Jurachno (1973). This is also the new record of the natural final host and the distribution of the cestode.
