Introduction to attack and defense: behavioral ecology of defense. Medieval insect behavioral ecology and chaos

Introduction to attack and defense: behavioral ecology of defense. Medieval insect behavioral ecology and chaos

Florida Entomologist 741: 1-9

The perception of insect behaviour by mediaeval European writers as a moral guidance to the actions of man is discussed. The authors conclude that present day notions of plant-insect relations are short sighted, not as simple as supposed or hoped, and like mediaeval observers of nature, such notions are formulated within the bounds of what is perceived to be right. When these notions are limited, they are open to criticism by more sophisticated observers. The difference between mediaeval times and now seemed largely to involve the rapidity with such criticisms were levelled. This paper was presented at a symposium on Insect Behavioural Ecology.
