From 1982 to 1983 the invertebrate and fish fauna of the River Sieber in the mountains of Harz (West Germany) was examined. In the upper part of the stream the composition of the fauna, species diversity and individual dominances were determined by low pH-values of about 3.3 to 4.2 and oligotrophy. The metarhithral, with increasing number of species and individuals was dominated by the taxa of Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and some Coleoptera. In the lower part of the Sieber the high pollution caused low number of species but high abundances. The dominant species were Tubifex tubifex and Chironomus thummi.
