Notes on small mammals on the Springbok Flats, Transvaal

Notes on small mammals on the Springbok Flats, Transvaal

South African Journal of Zoology, 174: 197-201

Small mammals were trapped at 3-mo. intervals on 6 trap-lines on the Springbok Flats, Transvaal during 1977 and 1978. Trapping success varied considerably (average 18.5%) during 5760 trap-nights. Eight rodent Otomys angoniensis, Rhabdlomys pumilio, Praomys natalensis, Dendromus melanotis, Lemniscomys griselda, Saccostomus campestris, Rattus sp. and Mus minutoides and 2 shrew species Crocidura hirta and C. cyanea were recorded in the area. Species composition and abundance differed on black turf and red clay. P. natalensis, R. pumilio and O. angoniensis were the dominant rodents and C. hirta the commonest shrew. Trapping success was greatest in late spring and autumn to mid-winter. O. angoniensis probably bred throughout the year, but P. natalensis and R. pumilio produced most young in spring and autumn.
