On the social behaviour of maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus)

On the social behaviour of maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus)

Boletim de Zoologia, 6: 63-77

The development of the social relationship between a male and a female captive maned wolves is analyzed and some notes on their general behavior in captivity are presented. The observations were conducted at the Sao Paulo Zoological Park Brazil from Feb.-June of 1979. The animals were observed for about 70 h, appr. twice a week in a 120 m2 enclosure. From Feb.-March the female was observed alone, then the male was introduced. The male was first observed alone in the enclosure for a day. The rest of the time male and female were observed together. The hypothesis is presented that an initial situation in which the animals behaved as territory owner (female) and intruder (male) was finally replaced by an organization of the kind territory owner/territory owner. The aspects analyzed were deposition of urine, variations of the places marked by urine, changes in urination frequency, changes in the points where the individuals rubbed their body, places where they defecated, variations in aggression and regions preferentially occupied by each individual.
