On the spawning of Pacific lampreys of the genus Lampetra in connection with the problem of the taxonomic status of small forms

On the spawning of Pacific lampreys of the genus Lampetra in connection with the problem of the taxonomic status of small forms

Voprosy Ikhtiologii, 184: 636-641

The 1st observations of the spawning of the arctic lamprey L. japonica in natural spawning grounds of the western coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula (Russian SFSR, USSR) are reported. Communal spawning of large and small lamprey (L. fluviatilis, L. planeri, L. reissneri, L. kessleri) and their spawning behavior is described. The structure of the species L. japonica is similar to the species structure of Salmo mykiss, S. gairdneri and S. trutta. The status of small forms of L. japonica is discussed in reference to its complexity and the parallel with Salmo. Designation of small forms of Lampetra as independent species or as freshwater forms of the diadromous lamprey remains in dispute.
