On the specificities of antennal olfactory receptor cells of Periplaneta americana

Antennal olfactory receptor cells of the cockroach, P. americana, were studied by extracellular recordings. On the basis of similarities between the reaction spectra, the cells were classified into reaction groups. Some new reaction groups are described. The spectra within the individual groups were examined by a total principal factor analysis. Based on these results, the classification of insect receptor cells as specialists or as generalists is discussed. The morphology of the sensilla, which housed the recorded cells, was also investigated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The alcohol- and terpene-sensitive cells were seen only in smooth, single-walled hairs; the cyclohexylamine cells were found in single-walled and in grooved, double-walled hairs.
