On the stickiness of egg envelopes in the family Acipenseridae

The stickiness of the egg membranes of the Russian sturgeon Acipenser guldenstadti, beluga sturgeon Huso huso and spine A. nudiventris is described. Scanning electron microcopy of the surface microstructure of the eggs revealed a sticky surface on the gelatinous layer which was capable of special movements enabling it to adhere to a substrate. Swelling of the membrane enhanced the action of these factors, resulting in the appearance of contacting formations (adherence points) to provide stable adherence of the membrane to a substrate.
