On the structure of species adaptive potential

On the structure of species adaptive potential

Zhurnal Obshchei Biologii, 455: 596-601

It is advisable to consider the species adaptive potential as a totality of specialized adaptations, postadaptations and preadaptations. The latter are realized under markedly unfavorable environmental conditions when accommodations and modifications fail to suffice. The activation of rudimentary structures, acquisition of adaptive value by mutations and increase in the number of functions of specialized adaptations represent a considerable reserve of the organism's survival in ecologically unusual technogenic ecotopes.
