On the structure of the filtering and tactile systems of the beak in Anseriformes

Species (23) of anseriformes were studied: swans, geese, ground ducks, river ducks, pochards and mergansers. The filtering species, river ducks and shel-duck, have a differntiated filtering system and well developed tactile complexes of the gonys tip. The pochards and merganser have a more rough filtering system, as well as a lesser number of mechanoreceptor complexes of the gonys. Species adapted to ground feeding, geese and ruddy sheldrake, have a weakly differentiated filtering system with partial reduction of lamellae, relatively weakly developed tactile system of the gonys and well developed tactile system of the culmen. The mute swan feeding on aquatic plants has features of both filtering and terrestrial plant feeding species.
