Seasonal variations in the feeding the Black Sea horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus ponticus Aleev

Seasonal variations in the feeding the Black Sea horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus ponticus Aleev

Voprosy Ikhtiologii, 183: 467-475

The intensity of feeding and the selection of food by the Black Sea scad T. m. ponticus in separate regions of the Black Sea (USSR) at different times of day were studied. The maximum intensity of feeding was observed in the summer and the minimum in the winter. During the spring the food species were predominantly Copepoda, while fish dominated in the summer. The nature of feeding was closely linked with the distribution of food organisms. Age-related changes were noted; juvenile scad predominantly fed on Acartia clausi, Pseudocalanus elongatus and Sagitta euxina; as the scad grew older the role of Calanus helgolandicus and fish species increased. At twilight and during the night the scad selected large forms of Copepoda, Decapoda and juvenile fish; during full daylight small forms of Copepoda were preferred.
