Data were presented on the quantitative study of selectivity formovement direction and contrast polarity in the visual cortex neurons. Experiments were carried out in anesthetized squirrels Sciurus vulagaris. Directional index was used to evaluate the selectivity of neurons for direction. Histograms were presented of the distribution of visual cortex neurons with various directional indices for the light and dark fronts of the contrast border-line. It was shown that for the most part of simple neurons (73% of all simple cells) in the visual cortex of the squirrel, the preferable direction of the movement of light and dark fronts of the moving contrast border-line depends on the character of contrast.
