Skeletochronological assessment of age in Angolosaurus skoogi, a cordylid lizard living in an aseasonal environment

Skeletochronological assessment of age in Angolosaurus skoogi, a cordylid lizard living in an aseasonal environment

Journal of Herpetology 29.3

Angolosaurus skoogi is a fairly large lizard (51-172 mm SVL; Pietruszka, 1988) that lives on the coastal dunes of the northern Namib Desert of Angola and Namibia (Andersson, 1916; Fitzsimons, 1953; Steyn, 1963). The environment in which A. skoogi is found is largely aseasonal. The species is assumed to be long-lived but no attempt has been made to age individuals in captivity. Mitchell et al. measured an increase in SVL and mass over time for hatchlings, juveniles, and adults thereby providing data to determine the age of individuals indirectly. The aim of this study was to assess the age of individuals from the field by applying the technique of skeletochronology.
