The present radiolarian stratigraphic study was made on the Hojuji mudstone member, the Iida diatomaceous mudstone member and the Iizuka diatomaceous mudstone member of the Neogene formations on Suzu area in Noto Peninsula. These mudstone members contain abundant radiolarian fossils which are generally well-preserved. The Hojuji mudstone member and the Iida diatomaceous mudstone member contain Mm type assemblage which is characterized by Melittosphaera magnaporulosa together with the species such as M. hokurikuensis, Sphaerostylus yatsuoensis, Spongoplegma variabile, Cyrtocapsella cornuta, C. tetrapera and Cannartus violina. The Iizuka diatomaceous mudstone member contains Ln type assemblage which is characterized by Lychnocanium nipponicum together with the species such as Sethocyrtis japonica, Cyrtocapsella japonica and C. tetrapera. The Hojuji mudstone member and the Iida diatomaceous mudstone member is correlated to the M. magnaporulosa Zone (upper Early Miocene .apprx. lowermost Middle Miocene) of the Neogene radiolarian zonation in Japan which was proposed by Nakaseko and Sugano (1972), and the Iizuka diatomaceous mudstone member to the lower part of the L. nipponicum Zone (upper Middle Miocene) by Nakaseko and Sugano.
