The effects of constant thermohydrographic factors on the biology of cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (Linn.) (Hemiptera: Homoptera: Aphididae)

The biology of B. brassicae (Linn.) was investigated under 4 temperatures (15.degree., 20.degree., 25.degree. and 30.degree. C) each at 4 relative humidities (40, 55, 70 and 90%). Nymphal duration, preparturition, parturition periods and longevity were significantly negatively correlated with temperatures. The shortest mean durations recorded at 30.degree. C were 5.2, 1.2, 6.9 and 26.1 days for the mentioned periods, respectively. The post-parturition period was significantly negatively correlated with temperature. The shortest mean period, recorded at 15.degree. C was 1.9 days. The temperatures tested affected mortality at different stages. The fecundity was also affected by temperatures. The females deposited the maximum mean numbers of offspring at 15.degree. C at 86.4 nymphs; the minimum mean numbers recorded at 30.degree. C was 14.9 nymphs. The relative humidities tested showed insignificant effects. The temperature was the most effective factor and the moderate temperature (20.degree. C) was optimal for B. brassicae reproduction, where the females deposited a large number nymphs and the lowest percentage of mortality occurred at this degree.
