The influence of oxygen concentration on the respiration rate of the resting eggs of Leptodora kindti (Focke 1844) and Bythotrephes longimanus Leydig 1860

The respiration rates of the resting eggs of Leptodora kindii and Bythotrephes longimanus were measured at different oxygen concentrations. Results showed a linear relationship between oxygen concentration and respiration rate to a threshold when respiration rate becomes constant. The slope and threshold differed for the species. The significance for the resting eggs in the natural environment, in low oxygen conditions, is to slow down metabolic rate delaying embryonic development and prolonging the resting period.
