Vitellogenesis in sea star: physiological and metabolic implications

Vitellogenesis is characterized by deposition of yolk substances in the oocytes. The precursors for these glycolipoproteins originate from the pyloric caeca. The processes of strorage, mobilization and release of pyloric caeca reserve substances and the mechanisms underlying size changes of the pyloric caeca are discussed, as are the molecular form of the yolk precursors (vitellogenins) and the route they follow to reach the ovaries. Emphasis is laid on autoradiographic and immunological approaches. Finally, a model, comprising external and internal factors, for the regulation of vitellogenesis in sea star is presented.
