Zwischenartliche Beziehungen zwischen freilebenden Guanaco (Lama guanicoe) und angesiedeltem Rotwild (Cervus elaphus) in Argentinien

Zwischenartliche Beziehungen zwischen freilebenden Guanaco (Lama guanicoe) und angesiedeltem Rotwild (Cervus elaphus) in Argentinien

Zeitschrift fuer Jagdwissenschaft. Marz; 421: 12-17

Red deer introduced to Argentina now occur in extensive areas of Patagonia. Their distribution overlaps partially with that of the guanaco. This paper describes direct interactions between both species in an ecotonal area within the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Both species are frequently found feeding on the same sites at the same time; and distance between individuals may be less than one meter. This raises the possibility that feeding competition exists, particularly as the floristic diversity is very low. Furthermore, this behavioural compatibility may affect the epidemiology of several diseases of both species. Although guanaco groups defend their territory from other guanaco groups, they accept red deer groups without showing aggressive behaviour.
